Beijing is a city of grand palaces, bustling streets, and stories whispered through the ages. Among its most captivating legends is that of the two dragons who once threatened to flood the city. According to the tale, these powerful creatures—father and son—were so furious they caused massive storms and chaos. The people of Beijing were terrified, until the heroic General Yue Fei, known for his bravery and tactical genius, stepped in to save the city.

After a fierce battle, the dragons were defeated and captured. Liu Bowen, a wise strategist, ensured that they could never rise again. The father dragon was imprisoned under a well at Beixinqiao, known today as “North New Bridge,” while the son was trapped at Chongwenmen. According to legend, the dragons will only be freed when the bridge grows old or the instrument at the city gate sounds—events that, thankfully, have yet to happen.

The story of Beixinqiao carries a strange charm. The bridge is said to never age, keeping the father dragon chained for eternity. Locals pass down the tale with pride, often pointing out that even in a city of skyscrapers and modern marvels, the past lingers in every corner. Visitors can imagine the ancient dragon hidden beneath the cobblestones, a silent guardian of the city’s history and a reminder of the power of courage and strategy.
